Naomi Ogawa has always been active. Raised by a single parent, who taught at the local university, Naomi's childhood was filled with drifting from one sport to another in an effort to stave off boredom. While she certainly enjoyed every game that she played, the girl still hadn't yet found one that ticked all of her boxes. Combined with her middling performance in classes, Naomi gained a bit of a reputation as a problem child, not that she tried to slack off. Left-brain thinking just eluded her for the most part, much to her parent's chagrin. She did endear herself to her parent through a shared love of fiction, one that filled the child's time when unable to participate in physical activity.

Come junior high, the budding teen found her calling. Introduced by a friend of a friend to her new school's Judo club, Naomi instantly fell in love with the sport. She proved to be a natural, quickly picking up the basics and then some. It didn't take long for her to join competitions, where she often placed highly for her rank, though the girl seemed unable to win an entire tournament. By the time she reached high school, she began double-timing with the school's wrestling club, applying old knowledge and learning new techniques along the way. All the while, she struggled with her studies, but persevered. After all, Naomi was determined to not be removed from her varsity squads just because of poor academics. She managed to finish high school, and was gearing up to attend a top-level university to further hone her skills.

Then it all came to a screeching halt. During her break, Naomi took a vacation with her parent, driving out of town for a few weeks of relaxation. They never arrived at their destination. A car crash claimed Naomi Ogawa's parent's life, and left the girl with severe injuries. While she eventually recovered, Naomi stagnated. She needed time to grieve, even if she wouldn't admit it to anyone around her. The young woman stopped schooling for a year, busying herself with books and exercise. It was a comfortable existence, if a somewhat lonely one. Without much warning, someone at Matsuo University uncovered her accomplishments, and offered an athletic scholarship, sending a scrambling Naomi to Keio Island.
